Chinese radioactive fish in Moroccan dishes calls for stricter contamination measures worldwide


Moroccans consume fish and sea radioactive products imported from countries of south-east Asia, mainly from China.
Some of these products are even caught in a sea area called “61”, classified as hazardous by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The area surrounded by several nuclear reactors would be among the most contaminated in the world by radioactivity areas, says the daily Al Massae.

The rising price of fish and seafood during the month of Ramadan pushes Moroccan consumers to turn to seafood imported mainly from China, deemed cheaper but of poor quality, the newspaper said.

Fish unfit for consumption?

In May, the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) refused landing in Morocco suspicious cargo of fish “Panga” imported from Vietnam. But the importer had the administrative court against ONSSA and has been successful.

This case reveals a great day activity amounting to several million dollars, which is mainly a shadowy trade. These imported frozen fish are sold in supermarkets. They are also used by restaurants for the preparation of pizza and fried fish.

According to the FAO, 80% of the world production of shrimp are from countries of East Asia, where they are bred in fish farms. These shellfish are fed by compounds essentially of fishmeal, and to prevent their oxidation, adding certain additives and chemicals hazardous to the health of consumers.

Area “61”, which is surrounded by several nuclear reactors, is one of the world’s most polluted fishing areas, where cancer pollutants, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins are proliferating.

Despite the potential danger these products for the health of Moroccan consumers, health authorities do not perform health inspections in the exporting Asian countries, unlike the countries of the European Union.

The import companies are entering their dangerous products in Morocco without any sample being taken and analyzed in accordance with the laws, concludes Al Massae.
